During their Andrea's Voice Presentations...

... Tom and Doris Smeltzer take their listeners on a journey into the heart and mind of a disordered eater. With the knowledge they have gained from extensive personal research, experts in the field and via their daughter's words they describe the factors that contribute to the development of an eating disorder, the warning signs, approaches to use when speaking with a suspected sufferer as well as the necessary components of an effective treatment plan.

Andrea's Voice promotes understanding without judgment. It contains the information the Smeltzers wish they had possessed prior to their daughter's involvement and which they believe is vital for all. They have learned that it is possible to promote and encourage disordered behaviors if one is not educated about the comments and actions that can become triggers. When eyes are opened to the various warning signs, contributing factors, and harmful triggers one can more easily recognize, treat and possibly even prevent these tenacious illnesses.

Healing IS possible...but one must first recognize that there is something from which to heal.

Presentation Evaluation Excerpts:

"Your talk was excellent. The personal aspect of it made it very effective. What was most surprising was how 'seemingly normal' your daughter was when she died. It made me really want to take action and talk to a friend of mine."--Northwestern University

"The focus on Andrea is a must; her words, her pictures, her ups, her downs-The reality is what captured me. HER story must be told. The statistics can be found anywhere, but the "Journey" of your daughter can save so many, including me"--Amherst College

"When I was listening to your husband read excerpts from Andrea's writings, they sounded so much like things I have written; especially the part about wanting to go home to get hugs. I never, ever, ever thought that anybody felt those things, only me. I know it sounds silly, but up until tonight, I felt completely alone in the world"--Westfield College

"Our students and guests were the most attentive to a presentation as we have ever seen. Thank you for giving so much of yourselves. You have left us with serious questions and hope."--SUNY Cortland

"Wisdom in health education circles is that "one-shot" deals …don't prompt change. I think the strength of your presentation challenges that principle. You have the validity of those who have gone through a devastating experience and the knowledge that comes from careful research. You have the wisdom to provide useful and doable action steps, and the personal warmth to make it safe to think, reflect and confront. Your presentation was brilliant-in all its meanings: full of light, clear in tone, and 'marked by intellectual acuteness'-an educational gem. It has made a difference in my life as a health educator and as a family member and friend. I will be more aware of what I say, more confident and consistent in gently confronting dangerous attitudes and behaviors."--Ithaca College
